Woman hit and killed along I-75 identified as Fort Myers woman

The woman hit along Interstate 75 by cars Thursday in Charlotte County has been identified.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers Sunday said the woman was Melanie Ann Beattie, 37, of Fort Myers.

Beattie was driving her vehicle north on I-75 near the 167 mile marker when her vehicle was involved in a minor, single vehicle crash with the Peace River Bridge.

Her vehicle was inoperable and she exited it. For unknown reasons, troopers reported, Beattie walked across the northbound lanes, climbed over a concrete barrier wall and into the southbound lanes of I-75.

Drivers told authorities Beattie was lying on an inside southbound lane. A 48-year-old Venice woman was driving a 2011 Toyota Camry that hit Beattie first. Four other vehicles also hit Beattie, and several drivers and witnesses stopped after the crashes and called 911, troopers reported.

FHP is asking if anyone saw Beattie before the fatal crash to call Cpl. Juan Quintanaat at 239-938-1800.
