San Carlos Park resident assaulted, robbed near home

A 25-year-old San Carlos Park man reported he was the victim of an armed robbery involving a gun early Sunday morning about a mile from his home, Lee County sheriff's deputies said.

The victim told deputies he was walking near Winged Foot Drive and Phlox Drive at about 1:40 a.m. when an assailant pulled up alongside him in a tan pickup truck and asked for a cigarette. When the victim kept walking, the suspect got out of the truck, pulled out a silver hand gun and hit the victim in the mouth, an incident report said. The suspect then took the victim's wallet.

When the victim tried running away, the suspect got back into his truck that had two passengers, deputies said. As the suspect drove away, he fired one shot from the handgun. A bullet casing was found at the scene, the report said. The victim was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital with injuries to his jaw after deputies arrived on the scene.

The suspect is described as a 6-foot, 220-pound white male with blond hair. Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call the Lee County Sheriff's Office at (239) 477-1000.
