Gulf Coast libero Cali Gutierrez was a dominant force on the back row as the Sharks capped off a perfect week on the volleyball court. The Sharks never lost a game in their victories over Cape Coral-Ida Baker, Port Charlotte and Golden Gate over three consecutive days.
"Cali has played pretty well and was our most consistent player all week," Sharks head coach Christy Wright said. "She pretty much takes over that back row, and she has been doing a really good job of being our leader back there."
Gutierrez led the way for Gulf Coast, last year's runner-up in 6A-District 14, by topping the team with seven aces, including a game-high five against Port Charlotte, and leading the team in digs with 22.
Perhaps, her biggest contribution, however, came in her ability to set up the offense.
"Her passing was excellent," Wright said. "She had no service errors the entire week which is impressive for a libero ... I think she is the best service receiver I've ever coached."
"Our serve receive is almost always perfect and it lets us pick up a lot of defenses," said Gutierrez, a junior.
After their impressive start to the season, Gutierrez and the Sharks will face their toughest stretch of the season over the next week. After facing rivals Naples and Barron Collier during the week, Gulf Coast will travel to Central Florida on Friday to compete in the High School Showcase Tournament in Winter Park.
"We are expecting big things," Gutierrez said of their undefeated start to the season. "We've been playing really well so I am excited to see what we can do."
