It appears no one was watching Marco Charter School's Santiz Ruiz, and they should have. Ruis finished second in leading the boys to a first-place finish at the Community School Invitational on Monday.
The Marco Island Charter Middle School opened its boys and girls cross country action with the boys winning the Community School Invitational in Naples on Monday.
The teams go to St. Ann for a 4:15 p.m. meet today and at Palmetto Ridge for an 8:30 a.m. meet Saturday.
The shock of the day came in the girls race.
Marco's Rosie Poling, easily the best runner in the area, if not the state, could not finish the race.
On a hot day, where some other runners had problems, Poling was basically out on her feet as she got within 200 yards of the finish line.
Always the fighter, she wanted to finish, but it was obvious that wasn't a good idea. Her mom, Patty a doctor, and a runner in college, cradled Rosie in her arms, consoling her.
Roger Raymond, cross country coach, said on Wednesday that "Rosie has been checked out by some specialists and seems to be fine. I really am not concerned about her as a runner. I am concerned for a wonderful young lady who means so much to our school and our team."
The boys placed their five runners, that count for the total team points, in the top nine.
Santi Ruiz raced to second, Josh Wagner, third, Mickey Poling, fifth, Jacob Wagner, eighth and Kyle Bartos, ninth. His brother, Kole Bartos, came in 11th.
Raymond said the girls did well, since two of the top runners didn't come to the meet and Poling could not finish.
Julia Cartwright led the Lady Eagles, placing third. Kelsey Halaschak came in fifth, Bailey Greaves was 12th, Bebe Marroquin was 15th and Abbie Meredith rounded out the top five, coming in 19th.
