A 53-year-old bicyclist was taken to the hospital, then jail, after he was hit by a car Thursday in North Naples, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers said Martin Anthony Martella was leaving the Marketplace at Pelican Bay plaza, riding east across U.S. 41, when he was struck by a southbound Toyota Corolla around 9:30 a.m. After striking Martella, the Corolla swerved left, landing on the raised median in between northbound and southbound lanes, according to a crash report.
Martella was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital by a med flight helicopter in serious condition. Upon being medically cleared later Thursday, he was arrested on a warrant for violation of probation and taken to the Lee County jail, a report said.
He was cited for violating bicycle regulations, according to the FHP.
