NAPLES — Forty-one Health Management Associates hospitals, including Physicians Regional Healthcare System in Collier County, made the Joint Commission's list of top performing hospitals nationwide.
Last year, 35 hospitals operated by the Naples-based HMA made the Joint Commission's list of 405 top-performing hospitals. Physicians Regional, which has two campuses at Pine Ridge Road and Collier Boulevard, also made the Joint Commission's list last year.
The hospitals this year were evaluated on performance-related accountability measures for patients suffering from heart failure, heart attack, pneumonia, surgical care, children's asthma care, stroke, psychiatric care and thrombosis.
"We understand that what matters most to patients at Physicians Regional Healthcare System is safe, effective care," Todd Lupton, chief executive officer of Physicians Regional. "That's why Physicians Regional Healthcare System has made a commitment to accreditation and to positive patient outcomes through evidence-based care processes. It is all part of our commitment to always strive to put patients first."
Other HMA hospitals included in the top performers this year are Lehigh Regional Medical Center in Lee County and Charlotte Regional Medical Center in Charlotte County.
All told, 620 hospitals made the top performers' list this year, an addition of more than 200 hospitals compared to last year. The Chicago-based Joint Commission conducts accreditation reviews of 3,300 hospitals in the United States.
"This recognition is based on the strong commitment of our physicians and associates to provide the highest quality care possible," Gary Newsome, president and chief executive officer of HMA, said in a statement.
Each of the hospitals named to the Joint Commission's top performers had to be in the top 95 percent of hospitals for a measurement.
The Lee Memorial Healthcare System in Lee County undergoes accreditation by DNV Healthcare, based in Cincinnati, and therefore would not have been included, Lee Memorial spokeswoman Mary Briggs said.
The NCH Healthcare System likewise was not included in the Joint Commission list of top performing hospitals.
"The various ratings agencies measure a variety of processes and outcomes covering different time periods," NCH spokeswoman Debbie Curry said.
"The NCH Healthcare System is continuously striving to provide the highest quality of care to the community."
