Black bear killed, hit by vehicle, on Alligator Alley

A black bear died Wednesday night after it was hit on Alligator Alley in east Collier County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The bear was hit around 6 p.m. on eastbound lanes near mile-marker 85.

FHP spokesman Lt. Greg Bueno said it was unclear what type of vehicle hit the bear. Following the collision, troopers pulled the bear out of the roadway to clear the travel lanes, he said.

Biologists with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will collect the carcass and other biological evidence this morning, spokeswoman Carli Segelson said.

How does any wildlife get on to the highway on Alligator Alley? I've driven it many times and it seems completely fenced in from the Everglades.
