Lee County Republicans knew what they were doing in August when selecting Larry Hart as their nominee for Lee County tax collector.
They chose proven leadership from Hart's 11 years as assistant tax collector and six months as a gubernatorial appointee to fill out the term of the late Catherine Curtis.
For Hart, it's all about public service. He joined the Fort Myers Police Department in 1979, where he stayed for 26 years, including six as chief. He was appointed to the board of trustees at Florida Gulf Coast University — by three different governors.
He knows from experience how to put technology and employee training to work to get the most out of shrinking budgets.
Hart is a solid citizen who has what it takes to lead this important public service agency.
We heartily endorse him in the Nov. 6 general election, for which early voting starts Oct. 27.
Also in race: James Chandler, no party affiliation.
Who can vote: All 376,000 voters in Lee County
