Ochopee Post Office to get painted pink to raise awareness, money for breast cancer

The country's smallest post office will be painted pink on Monday to raise money and awareness in the fight against breast cancer.

The Ochopee Post Office at 38000 Tamiami Trail East hopes to raise more money than any other post office through the sale of Breast Cancer Research first-class semipostal stamps for the month of October.

Everglades High School students will paint the building pink at 3:30 p.m. on Monday.

The small office in the Big Cypress National Preserve handles mail for 900 residents on a 132-mile route spanning three counties.

The outside of the structure measures 8 feet 4 inches by 7 feet 3 inches.

Stamps will be sold in sheets of 20 for 55-cents a stamp.

Sales from the stamps go toward the National Institutes of Health and the Medical Research Program at the Department of Defense, according to a press release from the post office. Sales of the stamp have raised $75 million for breast cancer research since 1998.

To buy stamps from the Ochopee location without visiting, mail a check for $11 a sheet to Ochoppe Postmaster, 38000 Tamiami Trail E. Ochopee, FL 34141-9998. Include a return address.
