A jury convicted a Naples Manor man Wednesday of shooting and killing his one-time girlfriend in a December 2009 murder-attempted suicide.

Kevin Risner, 46, faces life in prison following his second-degree murder conviction in the death of 43-year-old Laura Vroman. A Collier County jury returned the guilty finding on the third day of his trial.

Investigators said Risner shot Vroman, his roommate and on-again-off-again girlfriend, before turning the gun on himself. Risner survived a gunshot wound to the head and was found incompetent to proceed in July 2010. By January 2012, Risner had been transferred from a state hospital to the Naples Jail Center and found competent to proceed.

In the days after the shooting, Vroman's mother, Linda Angel, told the Daily News the pair met while Risner responded to an ad for a room for rent. Risner and Vroman lived together at a Holland Street home for a few months before the shooting, dating during part of the time, Angel said.

Risner had no prior criminal history in Collier County, though local sheriff's deputies responded to a domestic violence call between Risner and Vroman before the shooting.
