On Tuesday, the first day of the Class 1A-District 10 girls tennis championships, Community School’s No. 1 player, Nicole Drab, lost.
That setback, however, didn’t stop the Seahawks from repeating as district champions. CSN took home singles titles in No. 2 through No. 5, and No. 2 doubles on Wednesday at the Vineyards.
Emilie Touma (No. 2), Katy Wells (No. 3), Julia Covelli (No. 4), and Noelle Lindemann (No. 5) all won in their individual finals matches on Wednesday to lift coach Joy Frederick’s young squad. Touma and Wells also teamed to beat the Seacrest Country Day pair of Julia Murphy and Harriette Fletcher to win their second straight No. 2 doubles district title.
“This is the best tennis we’ve played all season,” Frederick said. “That’s a great thing considering how young our team is.”
While Lindemann is CSN’s lone senior, Wells is an eighth-grader and Covelli is in the sixth grade.
Even with all the singles victories, it was a win by CSN’s No. 1 doubles team of Drab and Lindemann in the semifinals that clinched the team title for the Seahawks.
Though Drab and Lindemann lost in the finals to Canterbury’s Emma Scott and Solange Ganther, they upset Seacrest’s No. 1 team in the semis to give CSN a total of 17 points.
Canterbury, which was led by Scott, the No. 1 singles winner, placed second with 13 points. Both teams will play in Tuesday’s regional championships. Community School will host 1A-9 runner-up Shorecrest Prep at the Vineyards beginning at 3 p.m.
Heading into Wednesday’s play, CSN led with 12 points, but was closely followed by Canterbury (9) and Seacrest (8).
