Stormy weather cancels afterschool activities in Lee, Collier counties

Because of threatening weather, afterschool activities in Collier and Lee counties have been cancelled.

In Collier County, all outside events and activities scheduled this afternoon and evening at any of the district's schools are cancelled. That includes events held outside of the public school facilities, such as sports practices.

However, activities and events set to be held inside school facilities, such as student-led conferences, are not cancelled.

In neighboring Lee County, all afterschool activities scheduled to take place this afternoon on Lee County school campuses are cancelled.

"We ask that parents communicate with their students to arrange for afterschool pickup if their student was planning on staying on campus after the school day," said Amity Chandler, a spokesperson for the School District of Lee County.

She said parents who have students in fee-based afterschool programs, such as the YMCA, on campus can be assured students will be cared for by regular program staff until they can arrange for pick up.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Lee and Collier counties, effective until 8 p.m. Gusty winds and heavy downpours are forecast tonight and into Friday morning in Southwest Florida.
