FGCU softball splits doubleheader against Mercer

The Florida Gulf Coast University softball team split a doubleheader against Mercer on the road on Saturday.

Mercer (22-22) pulled off a seventh-inning miracle against FGCU in Game 1 to come away with a 7-6 victory.

The Eagles (25-13) added an insurance run in the top of the final inning, making the score 6-4. Mercer, down to its final out of the game, survived with a solo home run. The three following Mercer batters were walked -- loading the bases-- which led to a walk-off double for the Bears.

FGCU would not be fooled again.

The Eagles batters recorded 14 hits, including home runs from Jessica Barnes and Kirsten Bembnowski, in Game 2, where they clobbered Mercer to earn a 12-5 win.

The win broke a four-game losing streak for FGCU. The team will close out the series against Mercer today at 1 p.m. in Macon, Ga.
