Police: Man paid $6,000 to rent home that's not on the market

Naples detectives are investigating a grand theft after a man reported paying nearly $6,000 to rent a house that he later learned was not on the market.

The victim responded to the Naples police station on Saturday and told officers he contacted a man via craigslist about renting a house on the 1800 block of Gulfshore Boulevard South, according to an incident report. The victim signed a contract over email and made a $5,980 payment via PayPal, reports said.

After making the payment, the victim was unable to contact the man who was renting the property, reports said. He went to the property and contacted a Realtor, who informed him the house is not listed as a rental.
