An emotionally draining regional loss wasn’t the most ideal way to end their high school tennis careers, but after winning back-to-back district titles, Community seniors Nicole Drab and Noelle Lindemann were still smiling after they walked off the courts of the Vineyards Country Club on Tuesday.
“We only got to regionals because we are one team. I’m going to miss everything,” Drab said.
The Seahawks dropped their 1A regional semifinal to visiting Bradenton-St. Stephen’s, 4-2.
“It’s been a great season. We’re not a team, we are a family. We win together, we lose together,” Lindemann said. “We left our hearts and souls out on the court so I’m proud of all of us.”
After their top two individuals, Drab and Emilie Touma, were swept 6-0, the Seahawks got a huge boost with wins from No. 4 Julia Covelli and No. 5 Lindemann.
The No. 3 match between CSN’s Katy Wells and St. Stephens’ Hailey Nicklin turned into a nearly three-hour marathon. Wells eventually fell 1-6, 7-5, 6-0.
“She has been fighting bronchitis the last few days so I think her energy level finally got to her in the third,” CSN coach Joy Frederick said of Wells. “Had she been feeling better I think the outcome would have been a little different there.”
The loss put the Seahawks in a hole and deflated the team’s momentum, including the No. 1 doubles tandem of Drab and Lindemann, which was playing their match on the next court over. The duo dropped the their match 6-1, 6-1.
“St. Stephens’ is a stronger team. They were just better than we were today,” Frederick said.
