It was a sister-led sweep for the Barron Collier girls tennis team as they made quick work of visiting North Fort Myers in 3A regional action at Vineyards Country Club on Tuesday.
The Kondrasovs, sophomore Anastasia and freshman Alexandra, and the Ettens, senior Shannon and junior Hannah, each swept their respective matches 6-0 to help the Cougars advance past the Red Knights.
“We like the sisterly love on this team obviously,” Cougars coach Nancy Geiman said. “It makes it interesting because you have the camaraderie and the tightness of sisters, and that is the nucleus of your team. It adds a different dynamic because we are all working toward this as one.”
“It’s fun. We are kind of big family anyway and it is great to have my younger sister on the team,” the elder Etten said. Sometimes I have to scold (Hannah) because she can lose her focus but I bring her back in.”
Focus wasn’t a problem as the Cougars ‘took care of their business,” as Geiman put it.
Anastasia, the team’s No. 1 singles player, was the first to finish her sweep over a clearly outmatched Kateryna Gorbanovska. Her sister Alexandra was equally as dominant.
“I was keeping it consistent and just playing my game. I was working on making stronger shots with more topspin,” Anastasia said.
“As Nancy likes to say, we took care of our business,” Alexandra said.
Shannon, who remained undefeated in the team’s No. 2 slot, kept her opponent Megan Sushil out of sync with her dominant service game.
Although, the match had already been clinched, Cougars No. 3 Emily Wyman won her match against Bailey Harris 6-1, 6-2.
“The mission in a match like this is to get on the court and get off the court as quick as possible. they followed those orders very well,” Geiman said. “I stand by my depth. My one through five stacks up pretty well with anybody out there.”
“We just got to stay focused,” Wyman said.
