An East Naples man is accused of throwing a rock at a man’s face after he was caught eating the man’s lunch Tuesday afternoon at a public park.

Three construction workers told Collier County sheriff’s deputies they left their lunch bags under a gazebo while they worked on a sidewalk at Sugden Regional Park, 4284 Avalon Drive. When they returned around noon to eat, they saw a man later identified as Simon Peter Melton noshing on their lunches, according to an arrest report.

Melton, 29, had devoured the contents of one lunch bag and was working his way through a second, the men said. The third man had to push Melton away to get his lunch back, deputies reported.

Melton left but returned five minutes later with a rock, which he slung at the third man’s face. The other two men tried to hold Melton back until the Sheriff’s Office arrived, but they let him go after he pulled out a box cutter, according to reports.

Deputies caught up to Melton as he was walking away, reports said. Melton, of the 2000 block of Airport-Pulling Road, faces charges of aggravated battery and attempted robbery.
