Costly mistakes gave Naples an 8-2 win over the Lely girls softball team on Tuesday night.

Naples, 17-3, nibbled away at Lely, 7-9, scoring in five of the seven innings.

It scored a single run to open the game on three straight bunts and a sacrifice fly. In the second it went to 2-0, with a misplayed ball leading to a double for Naples and the runner scored.

Another double scored two runs in the fourth and Naples closed out its scoring with four runs in the fifth inning, with help from three Lely errors.

Lely scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, with Navia Penrod slamming a solo home run for one of the scores.

Naples pitcher Ariel Martinez took the win, with Becca Gates suffering the loss, although she got herself out of three jams with strikeouts.

Naples coach Robert Iamurri said, “I thought our players did a nice job offensively, constantly getting people on base and scoring runs.”

Lely coach Jess Duesler said, “We made some important adjustments. This was a much better showing than when we played them earlier this season. I think we’re moving in the right direction going into districts next week.”

Class 5A-District 14 softball tournament at Lehigh begins on Monday. No. 4 seed Lely plays No. 5 seeded Estero at 4:30 p.m.

Naples boys baseball downs Lely

The Naples boys also downed Lely, 13-2.

Naples, 14-5, had an eight-run third inning and followed with a four-run fifth inning to assure the win over Lely, 11-5.

Girls lacrosse wins

The Lely girls lacrosse team won their seventh game against four losses in downing Golden Gate, 12-4.

Key players for Lely were Clara and Anna Bissell, Jordin Giles and Chelsea Magee.

Anna Bissell slammed in four goals and added an assist. Clara Bissell added three goals, Serinna Crowley, two goals and an assist, Giles a goal and assist, Magee a goal and two assists, Lexie Lundquist, a goal and assist,

It was a great effort by the entire team,” Lely coach Brad Bissell said.
