Members of the Marco Island Charter Middle School track team will compete in the Collier County Middle School Track & Field Championships on Saturday at Golden Gate High School.

They qualified at the South Collier Track & Field meet at Manatee Middle School last Saturday.

The championships will encompass the best county competitors from the North and South.

Right from the start Charter School’s Rosie Poling will defend her 3200 meter championship from a year ago. She also will defend her 1600 and 800 meter titles.

A year ago she beat her own record in the 3200 by nine seconds, after already winning 800 and 1600 meter races.

She said then, “I wanted to make it (record) impossible so it will be there a long time.”

Vanessa Torres qualified for the shot put, Emma Fernandez made it in the 3200. Bailey Greaves in the 400. Jaryn Pellant in the discus and 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.

Santiago Ruiz is the only boy to qualify. He will compete in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. A few boys who would have qualified in individual and team relays did not attend the meet.

“Obviously Rosie has a chance to win three events, but that is easier said than done,” coach Roger Raymond said.

He thinks the other qualifiers will do well and earn team points, but they will be far outnumbered for the team championship.
