Dr. Allen Weiss

Lytle: Would a hospital in southern Lee County hurt North Naples Hospital?

Weiss: You know, we have between the Lee Memorial system and Physicians Regional, including Lehigh Acres, we have one-third of the hospital beds not utilized on any night. So ...

Lytle: Even in season?

Weiss: Well in season, occupancy gets a little higher. But you know, in the old days we used to run out of beds. Happens very rarely now, literally a couple of days a year, so if you build for that capacity, and then you have even more unoccupied beds for the rest of the year, we have a system that’s unsustainable right now.

Pat Carroll

Lytle: Was that project (an $82,000 meeting room remodeling) necessary?

Carroll: I know that the superintendent had to move out of her conference room. You know, she routinely exceeded the occupancy rate. She had to do something.

I feel uncomfortable with amount of money spent. I’m very cautious about my own money, and I deal with function versus appearance, etc. And I think it probably could have been accomplished with a little less. So it makes me a little uncomfortable.

Lytle: Yes, but you had a vote on this, right?

Carroll: No.

Lytle: How’s that?

Carroll: No. This was the superintendent’s ... it fell under her control and auspices.

Lytle: Oh.

Carroll: So we had no vote. It was basically announced to us.
