The Collier County Middle School Track & Field Championships had it all on Saturday at Golden Gate.
Manatee Middle School boys team breezed by Immokalee Middle to end Immokalee’s `13-year win streak.
The Marco Island Charter Middle School girls’ team won the final event of the day, 4x400 relay, to run by two schools in winning its championship.
Marco’s Rosie Poling scored 30 of the team’s 55 points, defending her titles in the 800, 1600 and 3200 meter runs.
With two events to go, the 3200 and the 4x400 relay, Poling set up the drive to the finish by winning the 3200, just before the 4x400 relay. North Naples led with 50 points, Corkscrew had 48 and Charter School was at 45.
The Charter 4x400 team of Hannah Hagarty, Marissa Mengelkoch, Abi Meredith and Katie Cookson finished fourth in the Collier South qualifier on April 6 to barely get into Saturday’s race.
Neither the girls, nor coach Roger Raymond realized they had a chance of winning it all.
“I’m in shock, I didn’t know we had a chance,” Raymond said. “Our eighth grade girls have over achieved since they started competing in sixth grade.”
Cookson took the final baton in second place, but burned by her competitor.
“I saw her take the exchange and the look on Katie’s face was ‘I can take her,’” Raymond said.
Only eight Marco girls qualified for the championships but all eight scored points.
Manatee gave notice right from the start when Jose Rodriguez was first and Luis Rubio second in the first event, the 3200 meter run. Rodriguez would also win the 800.
Manatee won the 4x400 and scored points in every event. Manatee’s other boys individual winners were Isaac Mendez, discus and Kevin Ulloa, long jump,
“These eighth graders are the finest I have coached in nine years,” Manatee coach Justin Moomaw said. “We (also) went undefeated in cross country, volleyball and soccer. They are a group of winners.”
