Just as a reminder that a few years ago, the United States Congress established the month of May as the appreciation month of veterans, and that May 11 will be known as “spouse day.”
I feel that our country has been very noble to have set the whole month to recognize its veterans and especially to recognize the spouses who gave in a different way, but did so.
As a World War II and Korean conflict veteran, I appreciate still being a member of the Reserve Officers Association, Military Officers Association and Veterans of Foreign Wars organizations — all Southwest Florida chapters, which meet once a month. I with that all of us veterans would be a member of a military organization, as it is a reminder of what we should do for those younger ones who are serving in our country’s military today.
Let’s hope that those younger ones will join up to keep our organizations alive. We’re losing us older ones each day, as I read obituaries in the Daily News or others; and I think them for placing a photo of the U.S. flag next to the article. I look to see if I knew the veteran listed. I want to make sure that it’s not me.
Have a happy Veterans Month, and let’s not forget to thank our spouse on May 11.
God bless America.
