The Naples High School girls track and field team won the Class 3A-District 12 title on Thursday, April 18, 2013.

Palmetto Ridge’s Carlos Miranda is not only one of the best distance runners in the state, he is one of the best in the nation.

Last month at the Florida State Relays, Miranda ran the sixth-fastest time in the 1,600 meters in the nation among preps.

There are probably not enough fingers and toes in Collier County to count how many races the Bears senior has won in his four-year career. However, missing from Miranda’s gaudy resume are any state titles in track or cross country.

At the Class 3A-District 12 meet at Palmetto Ridge on Thursday, Miranda seemed like a man determined to change fact. Miranda easily captured the 1,600 and 3,200 to advance to Thursday’s regional championships at Charlotte High School.

But it’s not district ribbons that Miranda wants. It’s state hardware.

"I've been injured the past two years," said Miranda, a Florida recruit. "I really want to get these state titles. It's all about discipline, heart and determination over the next two weeks."

Last year, Miranda missed most of the track season with bone spurs in his heel. He came back late in the season but wasn’t in top shape. Though he qualified for states in the 1,600, he placed back in the pack.

A favorite for the state title in cross county last fall, Miranda succumbed to anemia and finished 19th.

“I’m feeling so much better,” he said. “I’m in great shape. Now it’s about fighting through to the state titles. I’m going all out for them.”

Also going all out was Naples High sprinter Victoria Guerra. The sophomore repeated her district victories in the 100 and 200.

Guerra, a sophomore, also ran the anchor leg on the Golden Eagles victorious 4x100 relay team. She also placed second in the long jump. Guerra’s 38 points led the Golden Eagles girls to their first district title in “a long, long time,” said Naples coach Stanley Bryant.

“This win is exhilarating,” he continued. “This championship has been four years in the making. Our girls have worked hard over the years and we’ve just kept adding athletes.”

One of those athletes is freshman Shenica Bazile, who placed second and third, respectively, in the 100 and 200 behind Guerra, and handed her teammate the baton in the 4x100.

“Those two were absolutely awesome,” Bryant said. “Nobody thought Shenica would do what she’s doing.”

By winning the 100 hurdles, Naples’ Rebecca Johnson joined Guerra and Bazile and six other Golden Eagles athletes in advancing to next Thursday’s regional championships at Charlotte High.

The Barron Collier girls, led by junior Summer Roorda’s win in the high jump, placed third. The Cougars were followed by Gulf Coast. The Sharks were paced by Caroline Barlow’s second-place finishes in the 1,600 and 3,200.

Led by freshman Tyler Byrd’s victory in the long jump, the Naples boys placed second, just ahead of the Bears and Barron Collier. Fort Myers won the meet.

Lely’s Anderson Joseph took the top spot in the 300 hurdles. The Trojans also took the top three spots in the boys high jump behind winner Noah Joseph and Richard Annorat (second) and Joe Wendell (third).
