Man accused of leading deputies on chase, struggling with them

A Golden Gate man was arrested late Thursday after Collier County sheriff’s deputies said he drove recklessly, led them on a pursuit and then struggled with them.

Jose Verdugo, 31, of the 4600 block of 19th Place Southwest, is facing charges of fleeing and eluding a law enforcement officer, battery on an officer, resisting an officer, reckless driving and driving without a license.

Around 9:30 p.m., a deputy noticed a Ford Expedition sport utility vehicle speed out of a Golden Gate gas station and skid sideways while squealing its tires, according to an arrest report. The deputy attempted to pull the SUV over, but the driver, later identified as Verdugo, would not.

Verdugo pulled into the parking lot of his apartment complex and came to a stop, reports said. Verdugo refused to turn off the vehicle and put his hands out the window. When told to exit the vehicle, Verdugo cursed at the deputy and said “You get me out,” reports said.

Verdugo struggled with deputies as they removed him from the vehicle and placed him in shackles.
