Lely sending 19 athletes to Region 3 track competition

Lely sending 19 athletes to Region 3 track competition

The Naples boys and Fort Myers girls easily won the Class 3A-District 12 Championships at Palmetto Ridge on Thursday.

Lely girls came in fifth and boys sixth, but are sending 19 athletes on to the Region 3 meet at Charlotte High School on Thursday. The top four in each event moved on.

The Lely girls qualified eight competitors in five events.

Taylor Fetzer will compete in three events. Fetzer was third in the 800 meter run and teammate Mallory Bell was fourth. She qualified with Lauren Hanscom, Johann Charelus and Christy Thorstenson when the team came in second in the 4x400. She and teammates Charelus, Bell and Thorstenson won the 4x800 relay.

Hanscom, Marissa Maag, Shantoy Williams and Stancy Joseph placed fourth to qualify in the 4x100 relay. Williams also qualified with a third-place finish in the triple jump.

The Lely boys will have 11 competitors in five events.

Lely took the top three places in the high jump, with Noah Joseph first, Richard Annorat, second and Joseph Wendell third.

Anderson Joseph won the 300 hurdles, with teammate Ricardo Colas fourth. Lech Pierre was third in the 110 hurdles. The 4x800 relay team of Jesus Hernandez, Ryan Davidson, Dalton Herrity and Richman Brooks qualified by finishing fourth. Austin Roman goes with his fourth-place finish in the pole vault.

In tennis, Casey Mendel, a sophomore, and Tatia Ghviniashvilli, a freshman made it to the first round of the state finals before bowing out. Both said the experience will help them for next season.
