The Florida Athletic Coaches Association has selected three local softball players District 18 players of the year.
After winning its first district championship, Golden Gate swept the district’s top player and coach awards in Class 5A. Senior Marinna Shadley, a former All-American, was the district player of the year after batting .616 this season with a .980 slugging percentage. Shadley also went 12-3 on the mound with a 0.83 earned-run average
Titans coach Gerry Shadley, Marinna’s father, is the FACA’s 5A-District 18 Coach of the Year for leading his team to a 20-7 record. Golden Gate’s win total is a single-season school record.
Gulf Coast junior Cali Gutierrez is the 6A district Player of the Year. The left fielder helped the Sharks go 12-9 this year.
In 3A, St. John Neumann sophomore Michelle Peterson is the district Player of the Year. She hit .622 with 31 runs batted in and a 1.156 slugging percentage. Peterson was 5-6 as a pitcher with a 2.01 ERA. The Celtics (8-12) qualified for regionals as district runners-up.
