Prep tennis: Six area players competing in all-star event Saturday, Sunday

A group of local players is looking to defend Southwest Florida’s title in an all-star tennis event Saturday.

Five players from Collier schools are on the area’s team in the Florida High School Senior All-Star Tournament. The event features players from eight regions around the state and was created by the Florida High School Tennis Coaches Association.

“All other sports have senior games, but there was really nothing for tennis,” said Naples High coach Tony Kamen, who is coaching the local players.

The Southwest Florida team won the inaugural all-star tournament last year. This year’s team features Gulf Coast’s Chris Barrus, Barron Collier’s Max Belsinger, Felipe Galvis and Shannon Etten and Naples’ Alex D’Angelo.

The eight teams compete in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Play begins Saturday at Embry Riddle University in Daytona Beach. The finals are Sunday.
