State: Auto shop owner didn't pay sales taxes for 2 1/2 years

For 2 1/2 years, a North Naples auto repair shop owner collected sales taxes that he never paid to the state, leading to his arrest Thursday on a felony charge, state investigators said.

Julio Antonio Rosado, 60, never paid sales taxes between April 2007 and January 2010, racking up tax liens totaling $170,000, according to an affidavit. Rosado owns Tony Rosado Automotive Services Inc., a repair shop located in a North Naples industrial park near Shirley Street and J and C Boulevard.

Rosado is charged with failure to file six consecutive tax returns, a felony punishable by up to five years in prison, and refusal to pay taxes due, a misdemeanor. Department officials notified Rosado of his sales tax obligation on several occasions, investigators said.

Rosado established his company in 2000 and has been at his Elsa Street location for seven years, according to the affidavit.

Rosado remains in jail as of Friday morning, with bond set at $30,000. In addition to a prison sentence, Rosado could be required to pay penalty and investigative costs if convicted.

His arrest is the second this week stemming from a Florida Department of Revenue investigation. Roberto Galvan, owner an East Naples tire and rim shop, was arrested Tuesday, with tax liens against him totaling about $16,500, according to an arrest affidavit.
