Only a freshman, Community School’s Stephanie Paul has established herself as one of Collier County’s best athletes.
Already a star for the girls basketball team, Paul can add state track champion to her growing list of achievements.
Paul won the 1A state title in Jacksonville on Friday in the discus event with a mark of 127 feet, 2 inches — nearly eight foot further than the nearest competitor. The fact that she was able to win it with her final pro is what impressed her coach the most.
“It was a clutch performance,” Matt Keraus said. “To have it come down to the last throw and be able to control her emotions was impressive.”
She also finished third in the shot put event after a throw of 37 feet, 9.92 inches.
Brianna Bartuccio, Barron Collier softball — Struck out 13 and allowed four hits as Cougars won in the regional quarterfinals.
Mirline Cherisme, Golden Gate track — Medaled in three events at the 2A state finals, including placing third in the triple jump.
Victoria Guerra, Naples track — Won regional title in 200, finished second in the 100. Ran a personal-best 12.01 in the 100 preliminary.
Sam Jaffe, Barron Collier lacrosse — Scored six goals to go with three assists as Cougars won their second round play-in game.
