A group of local high school players helped Southwest Florida defend its title in a statewide all-star event over the weekend.
Southwest Florida won the Florida High School Senior All-Star Tournament at Embry Riddle University in Daytona Beach on Sunday. The team, one of eight regions canvassing the state that was competing, included four local seniors.
The group consisted of Max Belsinger and Shannon Etten of Barron Collier, Chris Barrus of Gulf Coast and Tristan Miller of Cape Coral-Mariner.
The locals beat the Tallahassee region to win the title. The finals came down to the mixed-doubles portion of the matchup. Barrus and Etten were down 4-2 in the final set but won the next four games to give Southwest Florida the victory.
“This is a great event for high school seniors and a great way to end their careers and take with them some good memories before college,” said Naples coach Tony Kamen, who coached the area all-star team.
On Saturday, Kamen’s group beat the Tampa region in the quarterfinals and topped Tallahassee in the semifinals.
It was the second year of the senior all-star event, created by the Florida High School Tennis Coaches Association. Southwest Florida has won the championship both times.
