With word of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton speaking at a private Naples event today, her supporters went public.
Some 20 backers of the Ready for Hillary political action committee waved signs under the sun at the intersection of Airport-Pulling and Vanderbilt Beach roads to urge the former first lady to run for the White House top job in 2016.
"Hillary Clinton has what it takes," Fort Myers resident Corey Bailey, 25, said. "It's time. It's her time."
Many passers-by honked their horns in support, but the sentiment was not universal in Republican-heavy Collier County.
One man stopped at a red light heckled the supporters through his open window and gave them a thumbs down.
Naples resident Greg Clark said he was sitting at home when a friend called him after driving past the rally. He drove to the rally and started chanting anti-Clinton slogans as the ralliers tried to chant him down.
"I just had to meet these people," said Clark, 51.
Political news website Politico reported last week that Clinton would be speaking at a conference event sponsored by Fidelity Investments.
Clinton supporters positioned themselves near the Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, but the Fidelity event was at the Ritz-Carlton Beach Resort a few miles down the road.
That didn't matter to Clinton's fans.
"We are confident the message will get to her that she has support across the country," Ready for Hillary communication director Seth Bringman said.
