Dave Neill, president and publisher of the Naples Daily News, announced his resignation, effective Aug. 23.

Neill said Friday he is leaving to pursue a new opportunity in the news industry that he is unable to disclose at this time.

“It’s been an honor to be a member of the extraordinary team at the Daily News,” said Neill, 51. “Through one of the most difficult economic periods in history, the team never wavered, staying focused on serving the needs of our readers and advertisers. My decision to leave the Daily News and this vibrant and growing community is purely a reflection of the great opportunity ahead for me and my family.”

He said he looks forward to disclosing his new opportunity, which is located out of state, within the next several weeks.

“Dave’s leadership of the Daily News was marked by his passion, his commitment to the community and his stewardship of the vital role we play in providing essential news and information,” said Tim Stautberg, senior vice president of newspapers for The E.W. Scripps Company, the parent company of the Naples Daily News. “We are pleased for Dave as he takes advantage of this new opportunity and wish him well.”

Stautberg said the search for a new publisher will begin immediately.

Neill joined Scripps in 2006 as general manager of the Bonita Springs Banner. He was promoted to vice president and general manager of the Naples Daily News in 2007. He assumed his current role in 2010.

He and his wife Gina plan to keep a home in Naples, where they also have an art studio. Neill has been an avid photographer and a member of the National Press Photographers Association for many years.

Neill has been in the publishing industry for 34 years working in newspapers, magazines and book publishing.

He began his career as a newspaper photographer in Detroit and “progressed through almost every facet of the business.”

During his career, he said, ‘I’ve been fortunate to have lived in six different cities and work with hundreds of talented people in this industry.”

Active in civic affairs, Neill is or has been a board member of the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Bonita, the Greater Naples YMCA and Artis-Naples. He also has served on the advisory board of the Holocaust Museum and Education Center of Southwest Florida.

Typical Friday firing?

His schemes have been a disaster for the 'quality' of this paper.

Why would anyone advertise to the NDN website when so few bother to look at it anymore?
