St. Jean gets to see his team compete for the first time

Culmer St. Jean, former Lely star and college football standout gets to see how his Trojans perform for the first time under him at Estero in a preseason game on (Friday).

Game time is 7 p.m.

St. Jean led a talented Trojan team to an upset victory over Naples in 2006, He played quarterback and linebacker in the win.

Tonight will be part of the process in deciding who his quarterback will be for the season.

There are three quarterbacks competing and all have impressed in early season practices.

Senior Karbiel Dirogene and sophomores Cody Young and Lik Estilien are contending.

“All three have their strong points and are working to be complete quarterbacks,” St. Jean said.

Karbioel is in his fourth season and will again play offense and defense. Two seasons ago he was the starting quarterback, rushing and passing for more than 2,000 yards.

A year ago he played mostly defense, with more action at running back and quarterback near the end of the season. He was one of the keys on defense that led to Lely giving up 200 less points to their opponents in 2012.

Cody Young played on the freshman team last season. He showed enough in the spring varsity game to raise his quarterback stock.

Last season Estilien played mostly tight end, ran some and had a few plays at quarterback a year ago.

“Cody Young is a true quarterback,” St. Jean said. “He can throw and can run if necessary. He looked good in the spring game. He now has a better understanding of the speed of the game at the varsity level,” St. Jean said.

St. Jean talked about Dirogene being “a seasoned vet. He has knowledge of the game, is a playmaker and makes good decisions.”

“They all have flashes of greatness,” St. Jean said. “Probably Cody and Karbiel have the edge over Lik.”

St. Jean thinks he has a corps of receivers that will compliment all three.

They include Williamson George, Noah Joseph, Josh DuPrat. Stevens Beauplan and Alfrande Pierre.

St. Jean said his team will be defined on how they react after a mistake.

A poor pass, a dropped ball, a fumble, missed tackle, are times when things can go bad.

“It is what they do after the play that defines a man,” St. Jean said,

In district play there are only just two other team, Immokalee and Golden Gate, but St. Jean said all games are key.

“Our rivals include Naples, Immokalee, Barron (Collier), Pametto Ridge, Gulf Coast, any team in the county,” he said.

The Trojans also play Clearwater Christian, North Port, Port Charlotte and Sebring.

St. Jean doesn’t talk wins or losses.

“I expect them to play hard, give their best effort,” he said. “We will be judged by the body of work over the season. It (record) is what it is as long as they give their best effort.”
