CJ’s on the Bay staff participate in beach cleanup
It was hot and sunny with a breeze from the south a typical August morning on Marco Island. Being a Sunday, the island was quiet, slowly waking up. But early on the morning of Aug. 18, CJ’s on the Bay staff, family and friends were rearing to get out and clean up the beach.
Wearing matching bright orange T-shirts labeled “CJ’s Crew Beach Clean-Up” while picking up bags and bags of trash off the beach, they proved that not only are they the “Heart of the Rock” with fine dining, live entertainment and special events throughout the year on Smokehouse Bay, but also leaders in our community, improving the beach, one trash bag at a time.
Laura Owen, executive chef and the restaurant manager organized the group by starting the cleanup at both ends of the beach; one group at Tigertail Beach and the other at South Beach. Canvassing the beach, they met in the middle with more than fifty bags of trash. They removed a large amount of plastic straws, cups, cigarette butts and bottle caps. One of the first and most interesting finds was a golf ball on Tigertail Beach. The work the group contributed will keep our beaches beautiful for beachgoers and our wildlife safe from hazards.

Diane Hoover, Beach Advisory Committee Beach Clean-Up Coordinator was on hand at South Beach to welcome the group with supplies (trash bags, gloves and bottled water) all supplied by Publix. Bernardo Bezos, volunteer and Board member of the Marco Island Civic Association (MICA), was manning the beach “gator” to carry supplies, pick up full trash bags and give weary beach-walkers a lift. After a few hours of fun in the sun, the group was treated to lunch at the Dolphin Tiki. All participants reported that it was a great day.
The next Beach Advisory Committee beach cleanup for this year is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 19 and is sponsored by MICA. Participants can meet at the South Beach access or Residents’ Beach.
