Football mania was well served at the Southwest Florida Youth Football League’s (SWFYFL) Kickoff Classic II at Fleischmann Park on Saturday.

According to Steve Quinn, classic coordinator, over Classic I and II, more than 700 players and 300 cheerleaders took part, On Saturday, teams represented Marco Island, two teams, Naples, one, South Naples, two, Golden Gate two, Cape Coral, five. Other teams in SWFYFL played the Saturday before.

Teams played 10-minute halves with a two-minute half time. There were no winners.

Eddie Webb, Marco Eagles U12 head coach, said his teams having three “games” helped them get ready for the regilar season.

The regular season opens on Saturday, with games at Fleischmann Park and Mariner High School, in Cape Coral. Teams include Under 6, Under 8, Under 10, Under 12 and Under 15.

The schedule at Fleischmann Park:

9 a.m., Field 2, U6, South Naples Pirates vs. Naples Gators; 9 a.m., Field, 1, U8 South Naples Pirates vs. Naples Gators; 11 a.m., U10, Golden Gate Tigers vs. Naples Gators; 1 p.m., South Naples vs. Marco Island Eagles; 3 p.m., U12 Golden Gate vs. Naples; 5 p.m., South Naples vs. Marco Island; 7 p.m. U15, South Naples vs. Naples.

At Mariner High School:

11 a.m., U6 Dunbar Rattlers, vs. Lee County Hawks; 1 p.m., U8 Dunbar vs. Lee County; 3 p.m., U10, Dunbar vs. Lee County; 5 p.m., U12, Dunbar vs. Lee County, 7 p.m., U15, Dunbar vs. Lee County.

YOUTH CALENDAR

Cheerleading tryouts

Marco Magic Cheerleading will have tryouts and an open house, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 14 at Mackle Park. Coaches are Brittney Bo and Lyndsi Koszo. There are three squads, mini, 3-6, junior, elementary age and senior, middle through high school. The tryouts are free. For those who are chosen it is a six-month commitment and the cost is $600. Marco Football PPK

The Marco Island Parks & Recreation will have its 9th annual Punt, Pass and Kick competition on Sept. 16, There will be five age groups for girls and boys, 6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13 and 14-15. Winners in each division will advance to sectional competition. For more information call 642-0575.

Freestyle Marial Arts for Kids

Offered by the Defense Fitness Club, it is for ages 7 to 13. The program is based on five principles: Body Relationships, Balance, Extension, Blending and Controlling the Mind. Participants are asked to wear closed-toes shoes. T-shirts will be provided. The program, conducted at Mackle Park on Marco Island, is on Tuesday and Thursday, beginning Sept. 15 and runs through April 25. Times are 6:15 to 7 p.m., for beginners, 6:45 to 7:30 p.m. for intermediate. Instructor is Jim Boxma, second-degree Black Belt. Cost is $25 for initial registration and $55 a month. Call 642-0575. There will be no walk-ins.
