The rest area at mile marker 63 on Alligator Alley is closing Monday for construction.

Crews are reconstructing the rest area, building two recreational access areas, adding a public safety center, constructing a water treatment plant and upgrading the existing water treatment plant, Florida Department of Transportation spokeswoman Debbie Tower said in an email.

The rest area will remain closed until work is completed sometime next year.

There have been signs up for several weeks letting drivers know about the construction, Tower said. The entrance and exit ramps at the rest area will remain open for drivers who need to turn around.
