'Daily NewsMakers with Jeff Lytle' ... Why should Florida voters legalize marijuana for medicinal uses?

Why should Florida voters legalize marijuana for medicinal uses? John Morgan, co-founder of the Morgan & Morgan law firm of "For the People’’ fame, explains why it makes sense for patients if not pharmaceutical companies.

NewsMakers - John Morgan

Lytle: Follow the money on this. Who ... who will profit from your plan? Who will pay for the added enforcement of your plan? Money has to be involved somehow.

Morgan: Well, the people who are going to really lose will be the illegal drug cartels that are now making billions of dollars selling marijuana. They’re the big losers, the Mexican drug cartels.

Lytle: But they’ll still sell to the recreational abuser.

Morgan: They still will.

Lytle: OK. But your medical marijuana ...

Morgan ... The people who will benefit ... the state of Florida will benefit because it will be taxed. The state of Florida will benefit because it won’t be laced; it’ll be regulated. The state of Florida is going to benefit because new business comes from medical marijuana dispensaries. Taxes, property taxes come. Real estate values go up. If you talk to the people in Colorado, medical marijuana saved Denver. There was a "60 Minutes" special on it a couple of weeks ago.

So everybody is going to benefit. The state is going to benefit. We don’t need to lock people up in jail who are ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease) and go out and get some medical marijuana so they can have some dignity at the end. We don’t need to send out a SWAT team of 40 police officers to arrest a woman who’s basically a head on a pillow at the end of her life. Everybody’s going to benefit.

The only losers ... the only losers will be illegal drug cartels.

Lytle: Your book is subtitled "The surprising truth about wheat, carbs and sugar, your brain’s silent killer.’’

Perlmutter: Yeah, and again the message here is, believe or not, the food that we eat impacts our brain health. Everybody’s talked about the heart-smart diet all these years, and women should have leafy green vegetables to help their bones be strong. But the brain has always been left out of the conversation in terms of lifestyle factors that affect its function.

We now understand that the brain is really wonderfully sensitive to the foods that we choose to eat. And, you know, you mentioned in the intro, Alzheimer’s. It’s well beyond that. It’s depression. It’s AD/HD in our children. So there’s a lot of ... It’s a very wide net.

Lytle: Grain, you mean whole grain.

Perlmutter: All grains. All grains are high in carbohydrates. Carbohydrate foods and sugars are specifically devastating to brain health.

Lytle: Red meat?

Perlmutter. Red meat, if it’s grass fed in small amounts is a really good thing for you brain.
