Letter: Christmas joy

It’s that time of year when the Northside Naples Kiwanis Club goes into high gear and provides hot meals, toys, gifts and fun to thousands of deserving individuals and families in Immokalee.

For the 29th straight year, Northside brings smiles to those hardest hit in our community. "Christmas in Immokalee" is this Kiwanis Club’s biggest event of the year and can’t be done without the generosity of countless individuals and businesses throughout our county.

The day begins at 7 a.m., where an army of volunteers begin setting up tents, grills, and tables of toys, gifts, diapers and craft stations for all to enjoy. By 10 a.m., the horses and ponies have arrived for rides, the candy tents are full for picking, and Santa and Mrs. Claus are ready to greet the children and take photos with them. The popcorn, cotton candy and snow cone machines are all in goodies-making mode, and Airport Park is at full capacity.

The lines for dinner reach around the park, while longer lines hold the hundreds of children waiting to pick out a toy of their choice. Music is playing, children are laughing and faces are getting painted.

In an environment where hardship is a daily routine, this particular event brings smiles and full bellies to those who need it the most. I guarantee if you become a part of this amazing day your life will change, forever.
