Dave Warner of Fort Meyers was standing at the net, knowing he had one more game to play to win the 65-69 age group pickleball title at the 2013 Florida International Seniors Games & State Championships as the competition concluded over the weekend.

He had already played 14 matches in winning doubles with Donald Weller of Cape Coral in in the 60-64 age group and second in mixed doubles with Susan Vinson of Fort Myers.

Playing Rick Fagerburg of Peoria, Ill., fans and Fagerburg thought he had won the championship, downing Warner 2-1 in games. Fagerburg had battled his way to the final match by working his way through the losers’ bracket after losing to Warner.

Warner’s loss gave him the same won-loss total, 4-1, tying Fagerburg.

Few realized, including Fagerburg, that since their records were equal and they had beaten each other, they had to play a single playoff game to 15.

Fagerburg admitted after the playoff game that he had lost his momentum after thinking he had already won the title.

Warner mounted an 8-0 lead right away. Fagerburg battled back, scoring eight straight points, but from that point on his tank was empty. Warner won 15-9.

Warner’s reason for success, simply put, “I made more shots than he did. I guess I had the edge because I knew there would be a final game if I lost.”

During the Games more than 1,800 competitors took part, coming from 27 states and Canada, Puerto Rico and and Russia.

Games highlights include Andy Morrow, 75, of Bonita Springs, who set swimming records in the 50 freestyle, 30:10 and 100 freestyle, 1;08.52, while also winning the 200 freestyle and 100 IM in the 75-79 age group.

Steve Becker, 51, of Naples, won the 100 butterfly and 200 IM in the 50-54 age group. Sylvia Eisele, 84, of Fort Myers, won the 100 IM, 200 back, 200 breast and 100 breast. Bruce Faubel, 53, of Cape Coral, won the 50 free and 50 back.

The 2014 Games return to Lee County, Dec. 6-14. It will also serve as a qualifier for the 2015 National Senior Games in Minneapolis.
