Mayron Alonzo-Escobar, 21, faces a felony charge of battery.

A 21-year-old Golden Gate man was arrested Thursday, accused of punching a thief in the nose.

The only problem — the thief was an opposing soccer player who stole the ball from him during a game.

Mayron Alonzo-Escobar, 21, of the 4300 block of 17th Place Southwest, is facing a felony charge of battery.

In mid-December, Alonzo-Escobar was playing in a soccer game at Eagle Lake Community Park, according to an arrest report. During the game, one of the opposing players stole the ball from him several times.

At one point, the opposing player again stole the ball from Alonzo-Escobar, who proceeded to punch his opponent in the nose, knocking him unconscious, reports said. When the victim came to, Alonzo-Escobar was standing over him as if he wanted to continue fighting.

Alonzo-Escobar fled the field in a red sport utility vehicle. Deputies tracked him down at home on Thursday. Alonzo-Escobar denied punching the opposing player.
