Prep girls basketball: First Baptist routs SFCA for fourth straight district title

Make it four-for-four for the First Baptist Academy girls basketball team.

The Lions have been a varsity program since the 2009-10 season, and in each of those years, First Baptist has won a district title.

The latest championship for the Lions came at home on Friday night when FBA defeated Southwest Florida Christian, 52-16, in the Class 2A-District 10 title game.

Sophomore Emily Lines led First Baptist with 25 points, eight points above her season average.

But after the game, Lions coach Jennifer Lines wanted to talk about two seniors — Ali Emerson and Taylor Cox.

The pair were there as seventh-graders for Lines when FBA first created a girls team six years ago as a JV squad.

"They helped start our program," said Lines, Emily's mother. "Tonight is really special. This is a tribute to them and what they have invested in the last six years."

The outcome of Friday's game was apparent before the opening tip. First Baptist met the Kings (18-8) twice in the regular season, beating them by scores of 51-20 and 63-19.

The Lions took a 17-3 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. Rachel Mosbach and Emerson added 10 and 9 points, respectively, for the winners.

"This shows that hard work definitely pays off," Emerson said. "It feels good for it all to work out. I'm excited to see how regions play out."

The Lions will host a regional quarterfinal on Thursday against St. Petersburg-Canterbury, which lost the District 9 title game to Sarasota Christian 35-20.

Coach Lines said after Friday's game that her team's goal, like that of every team in the postseason, is to make the state final four.

"It's going to take a lot of hard work," said Lines, whose team improved to 16-11 this season. "We've prepared ourselves more than any other season. But right now, we've got our sights set on the regional quarterfinal."
