JACKSONVILLE — John Avery II sprang into action when he saw a pickup truck speed away after hitting a pedestrian in Jacksonville.
The 44-year-old man told The Florida Times-Union that he didn't want the driver to get away. So he followed him to a nearby parking lot where the driver tried to run. That's when Avery says he pulled out his gun and ordered the man to stop and lie down on the ground.
Avery and passenger Gary Gibson held the man until police arrived. Avery says he was on the phone with a 911 dispatcher and informed them of his weapon.
The driver, 26-year-old Tracy Andrew Isbell of Covington, Ga., was released from jail Thursday.
Authorities say Joseph Bastian is expected to survive.
