Lady Eagles' bench comes through over North Florida

The Florida Gulf Coast University women's basketball team kept their undefeated Atlantic Sun Conference record alive with a 66-50 win over North Florida on Monday.

Trailing by three in the final three minutes of the first half, FGCU went on an 8-2 run to lead North Florida, 31-28, at halftime. The Eagles were able to secure a insurmountable lead, due-in-part to the team shooting 50 percent from 3-point range and 91 percent from the free-throw line in the second half.

"UNF is a good defensive team," FGCU head coach Karl Smesko said. "They were able to get Sarah (Hansen) and Brittany (Kennedy) into foul trouble, but our bench, especially Anthi (Chatzigiakoumi) and Betsy (Adams), steepped up when we needed them most."

Senior guard Adams and sophomore forward Chatzigiakoumi provided a combined 25 points off the bench for the Eagles. Adams also gave the Eagles a defensive spark by obtaining 5 rebounds, which was tied for the team-high with senior guard Hansen.

Senior guard Iamstrong led the Eagles in scoring with 18 and was perfect on all seven of her shots from the free-throw line.
