3 elementary school students accused of starting brush fire

Three Manatee Elementary students face felony charges after sheriff's investigators said they started a fire that threatened homes in East Naples.

The boys, a 9-year-old and two 10-year-olds, were arrested Friday night following the fire on Sitterley Lane, which was extinguished by firefighters before any damage occurred. They each face a single charge of intentional burning of land.

The boys were arrested Friday night following the fire on Sitterley Lane, which was extinguished by firefighters before any damage occurred. They each face a single charge of intentional burning of land.

Witnesses told investigators the boys were seen behind a home on the 12000 block of Sitterley Lane, playing with a gasoline can and lighter. Firefighters needed several minutes to extinguish the fire, an arrest report said.

The fire was described in the report as "extremely large," but an exact size isn't listed. Flames came within 15 to 20 feet of homes, requiring evacuations, the report said.

Investigators spoke with parents of the three boys before transporting them to jail for booking, the report said.
