Arson suspected in San Carlos Park brush fires

San Carlos Park fire officials are investigating five possible arsons that were started within a 2.5-mile radius.

Between noon Wednesday and 6 a.m. Thursday, firefighters worked to put out five suspicious fires in wooded areas along U.S. 41 between Sanibel Boulevard and Constitution Boulevard, department spokeswoman Alexis Rothring said. No homes or other structures were threatened, but about 5 acres were burned.

Rothring said the proximity of the fires arose suspicion because they were close but not close enough to have started each other. The origin points also appeared to be similar, she said.

"We are kind of putting out the word to neighbors to keep your eyes open but also let us know if you saw something," Rothring said.

Anyone with information on the fires is asked to call the Fire Department at 239-267-7525 or the Arson Hotline at 1-800-342-5869.
