Prep boys basketball: Brecher gives First Baptist first-ever district title

FORT MYERS — It was not the narrative that First Baptist expected to win the first boys basketball district championship in school history, but it was much more exciting this way.

The Lions overcame an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat Southwest Florida Christian 52-50 for the District 2A-10 title at Studio G. Grace Building on Friday night.

Tyler Brecher etched his name in school lore by making the winning shot. Tied at 50 with half a minute left in the game, Austin Williamson rebounded a missed free throw. He saw Brecher open at half court and launched the ball.

"I looked up and I was hoping that someone was there," Williamson said. "And he was there."

Brecher, who had missed the other six shots that he took, made the basket that he needed the most.

"It feels great," Brecher said. "I feel really blessed to be here and come out with a victory. It's just great."

The Lions (22-2) will host Canterbury of St. Petersburg in the regional quarterfinals next Thursday. The Kings were the defending district champions.

Both teams played a tight first half worthy of a rivalry game. There were seven lead changes, and both teams looked poised and confident.

"These kinds of rivalry games, they're like that," First Baptist coach Scott Stewart said.

But the Kings unloaded four three-point shots in the third quarter. Starting with a 10-0 run, they took a double-digit lead.

"We came out in the first half thinking we were going to win big," Brecher said. "But they really came to play. You could tell by the score."

First Baptist switched to a full-court press for the fourth quarter, and that flipped their fortunes. The Kings missed their first five shots and did not score at all until a free throw with 2:13 left. All told, the FBA defense allowed just three points for the entire quarter.

"We just needed to pick it up on defense, really bust it, and just do what we do," Williamson said.

Williamson led the Lions with 13 points, while Lorenzo Jenkins had 11. Remy Santos scored 10 points, including two three-pointers.
