Prep boys basketball: First Baptist rolls over St. Pete-Canterbury in 2A regional quarterfinal

With considerable size advantages at every position, the First Baptist Academy boys basketball team eased to a 68-29 victory over St. Petersburg-Canterbury on Thursday night in Class 2A regional quarterfinal action.

With six players in the rotation standing 6-foot-2 or taller, the Lions (24-2) jumped out to a 23-4 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back.

Reserve forward Trey Koonce led a balanced Lions scoring attack with 12 points. Austin Williamson, FBA's leading scorer this season, added eight points. Five other Lions — Tyler Brecher, Isaiah Herrera, Remy Santos, Doobie Jenkins, and Jason Perry — each had seven points.

"We didn't know what to expect from Canterbury," Lions coach Scott Stewart said. "We saw some of their scores, talked to a few people. But we're more focused on what we do and need to do.

"We wanted to bring the defensive intensity up a notch in the postseason. Teams that win championships play strong defense."

The Lions' win sets up a home regional semifinal matchup with Sarasota Christian (23-7) on Tuesday. The teams met on Dec. 3 with FBA pulling out a 69-64 road win.

"We know them well," Stewart said of Sarasota Christian. "They are a very good team."

In that game, as they did on Thursday, the Lions plan on exploiting their height advantage. Led by the 6-foot-8 Williamson, a senior, FBA can put four players on the floor at one time taller than 6-foot-4.

The Lions' length creates problems for their opponents on offense and on the boards. But more than anything, Stewart said he is looking for continued team play from his troops.

"Our theme is team," he said. "We try to get everyone to buy in that everybody on the team can help and that on different nights it will be different guys stepping up."
