Rescue teams locate man who capsizes canoe

Rescue teams looking for a man whose canoe overturned off the coast of Everglades National Park found him late Thursday.

The man, whose name has not been released, was on an island waving a flashlight at a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter.

The man’s friend told dispatchers about 7:30 p.m. that the two were on Pavillion Key when the man left with the canoe.

The friend reported seeing the canoe overturn in choppy water but never saw the man come up for air, said Krista Williamson, a spokeswoman for the Collier County Sheriff’s Office.

Rescue units from the Sheriff’s Office, the Marco Island and Ochopee fire departments, the U.S. National Park Service and the Coast Guard responded to search, she said. Marco’s fire-rescue department also deployed a special marine team.
