Prep basketball: Community School, First Baptist boys and girls receive FACA honors

The Community School and First Baptist basketball teams received top honors recently when the Florida Athletic Coaches Association voted on its district awards.

Both schools had the FACA District 18 boys and girls players of the year, as well as the coach of the year, in their respective classifications.

Community School junior Jeff Merton is the district player of the year in 3A, while the Seahawks’ Greg Donahue is district coach of the year. Merton averages 16.8 points and 8.1 rebounds for the district champion Seahawks (26-2).

First Baptist senior Austin Williamson is District 18’s top player in 2A after averaging 13.6 points, 9.7 rebounds and 2.6 blocks a game. Scott Stewart in the coach of the year after leading the Lions (24-2) to their first district title and first regional victory.

Community School senior Grayson Pinholster is the FACA District 18 girls player of the year in 3A. Mitch Woods is coach of the year for guiding the Seahawks (24-6) to their ninth straight district title.

In 2A, First Baptist Academy sophomore Emily Lines is the player of the year. She averaged 17.5 points and 7.9 rebounds a game for the district champion Lions. FBA’s Jen Lines is the 2A coach of the year in District 18.
