NAPLES — Grey Oaks Country Club will host 250 golfers from 22 states for its 13th annual Ladies Invitational Golf Tournament on Monday and Tuesday.
“The Ladies Invitational is one of the biggest events of the year at Grey Oaks,” club pro and former U.S. Women’s Open qualifier Leslye Dyke. “In fact, this event is one of the largest multiple-day women’s golf events in the country.”
Women’s play has been a priority at Grey Oaks’ three courses. Last year, 48 percent of the rounds at the club were played by women.
LPGA Tour pro Kristin Tamulis, a Naples High grad, plays out of Grey Oaks on the tour.
“Grey Oaks is one of the leading private country clubs for women’s golf in the U.S.,” she said. “ ... I take a lot of pride in serving as an ambassador for the club. I see Grey Oaks members at virtually every stop on the LPGA Tour.”
Women’s International Four-Ball: Mary Jane Hiestand, a Hideout Golf Club member, and Diane Lang of Estero shot a 146 to finish third at The Wanderer’s Club in Wellington on Sunday. Hiestand and Lang shot a 146. Palm Beach’s Tara Connelly and Oakland Park’s Meghan Stasi won a five-hole playoff for the title at 142.
Naples/Fort Myers Service Academy tourney: The third annual tournament was played Jan. 26, with 32 graduates of the U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, and U.S. Coast Guard Academy at The Plantation Golf & Country Club in Fort Myers.
The Navy squad defeated its sister academies with a 597 score, based on the eight best net scores, to 603 for Army, and 615 for Air Force. Bob Tamburini of Navy was individual low net. Members of the Navy squad were: Peter Easton, Dick Hartley, Norm Bednarek, Jim Mintun, Frank and Julie Cleary, Jhon Hamilton, Bruce Needham, Al Beatrice, and Peter Brown.
Rick Smith in town: Instructor Rick Smith is at his academy at Raptor Bay this weekend, and will be conducting premier lessons for $750 per person. Lessons are available from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 1 to 4:30 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and 1 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Sessions are limited to six students, and include 3 1/2 hours of instruction with Smith, and assistance from Rick Smith Golf Academy instructors. U.S. Open qualifying: The United States Golf Association announced the 111 sites for local qualifying. The Forest Country Club in Fort Myers will host the closest local qualifier on Monday, May 6. It’s one of 16 qualifiers in the state of Florida. Sectional qualifiers will be June 3. The U.S. Open is at Merion Country Club in Ardmore, Pa., from June 13-16.
